German police detain suspect in murder of two Ukrainians

Two Ukrainian citizens aged 36 and 23 were killed in Germany on the evening of April 27, German police reported. Law enforcement officers have arrested a 57-year-old Russian citizen on suspicion of murder.

The two Ukrainians were found with stab wounds on the grounds of a shopping center in Murnau. The 36-year-old man died on the spot from severe injuries, and the second victim died in the hospital.

Both Ukrainians lived in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district.

"As part of an immediately launched search, a 57-year-old suspect was found and arrested that evening at his home address near the crime scene. The suspect is a Russian citizen," the German police said.

The background and motive for the murder will be investigated. The prosecutor's office demands the arrest of the detainee. The case is to be transferred to a judge on April 28 to decide on this issue, the report says.

Murders of Ukrainians in Germany

Ukrainians, including 17-year-old basketball player Volodymyr Yermakov and 18-year-old Artem Kozachenko, were assaulted in Germany on Feb. 12. Yermakov died immediately from stab wounds. Kozachenko also died on Feb. 20.

The Kyiv Basketball Federation reported that the young men were allegedly attacked because they were Ukrainians.

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oleh Nikolenko reported later that the killer had been detained in Germany. The perpetrator is a 15-year-old schoolboy of German-Turkish descent from Gelsenkirchen. According to media reports, the Ukrainians were attacked after an argument on the bus.

Three more teenagers were arrested in Germany in connection with the murder, DW reported on Feb. 16.

A 27-year-old Ukrainian woman was found dead in Germany on March 14. According to police, the refugee and her mother were previously reported missing.

Later, police found alive the child of a 27-year-old Ukrainian woman who was killed in Germany. It was found in the possession of two men, who were later arrested.
