5 Of The Best Foodie Destinations In New England, USA

You’d go to New York for fresh-out-of-the-oven bagels, California for a delicious plate of fajitas and the southern states for a succulent rack of ribs – but have you ever thought of New England as a foodie destination?

We visited the states of Rhode Island and Connecticut on the north-eastern coast of the US and found it to be awash with buttered lobster rolls, mouthwatering meat sliders and homemade peanut butter ice cream. We’re drooling just thinking about it…

Harry’s Bar & Burger, Providence, Rhode Island

Providence, the capital city of Rhode Island, is updating its old-fashioned image and is actually now very hipster – the Shoreditch of Rhode Island, if you will. Food trucks are massive here (on the same level of popularity as in Boston/New York), but it’s the sliders that stole our hearts in Providence. We visited Harry’s on Providence’s main street and, after an exhaustive eight-hour flight, it was just what the doctor ordered. We devoured Cajun spiced turkey sliders and haystack onion strings (like onion rings, but way better, and more addictive) with chipotle ketchup and bottomless soft drinks. It certainly gave Meat Market a run for its money – and for $15 a head, we certainly weren’t complaining.

Chef Walter’s Cooking School, Providence, Rhode Island

Chef Walter Potenza is something of a pioneer in the Providence culinary scene – he’s appeared on Food Network, cooked for the Pope and has his own line of Italian pasta sauce in US supermarkets. So when we were offered the chance to scratch up on our cooking skills with him, we weren’t going to turn it down. We spent three hours learning how to make pasta from scratch, a hearty vegetable broth and a moist choccie cake – and the best bit is, you get to sit down and eat it all afterwards with a glass (or two) of vino. Prices start from $95 per person or if you’re feeling a bit more adventuros, you could sign up for a couple’s cooking class, for $250. While you’re there, make sure you visit Angelo’s on Federal Hill – it’s one of the oldest (and most acclaimed) Italian restaurants in Providence.

International Tennis Hall Of Fame, Newport, Rhode Island

Stay with us here. Let’s start by saying that the town of Newport on Rhode Island’s coast is one of the most Insta-worthy places we visited, with a rich sporting heritage and sailing history, and stunning coast. If Wimbledon got you in the mood for tennis, then a visit to the home of the US Open is got to be on the cards. Once you’ve exhausted your energy on the historic grass courts, we’d recommend having a plate of traditional Rhode Island lobster rolls while overlooking the tennis. They’re lovely and buttery, and are teamed with hand-cut chips and jugs of ice tea. Bliss!

Stony Creek Brewery And Lobster Shack, Branford, Connecticut

If you’re more of a Pilsner Urquell person than a craft beer enthusiast, then allow Stony Creek Brewery to change your mind. A short 90-minute train journey from NYC, it’s the first destination brewery on the East Coast and a tour of the brewery (as well as two free beer tastings!) is just $5 per person. Just across the river is Lobster Shack, where you can get a Hot Lobster Roll for $16 (worth every penny) and eat it on the riverside, overlooking the brewery. While you’re here, visit Pepe’s Pizza in nearby Newhaven – it’s been voted the best pizza place in the US.

Victoria Station Café, Putnam, Connecticut

Peanut butter fiends won’t be able to resist the homemade peanut butter ice cream and the freshly-baked peanut butter cupcakes at Victoria’s in Putnam. Even after scoffing our lunch at a café down the road, we still had room for the iced dessert that tasted like heaven on earth. They even have a mini bakery just for your pooch. Don’t miss out.
