41st Annual Civil War Encampment at Fort Scott National Historic Site

FORT SCOTT, Kan. — The past was brought back to life at a Southeast Kansas historical site, this weekend. It was for the 41st annual Civil War Encampment at the Fort Scott National Historic Site.

Park officials say they saw over 700 people visit the site on Saturday.

Today – they saw nearly 300 visitors.

The two-day event provides attendees a small glimpse of what life was like during the Civil War — thanks to various demonstrations – like infantry and artillery drills.

“History is important. If we forget what we’ve done, where we’ve been, who we are, we’ll repeat it. We need to help people understand. This isn’t just the history of unnamed people from the past. This is our history. This is our family who is involved. This is what happened right here in Kansas, in the border with Missouri, all the way down into Arkansas and Oklahoma,” said Carl Brenner, Ft. Scott Natl. Historic Site Program Mgr. for Interpretation and Resource Management.

The site’s next big event is Symbols of Sacrifice – taking place on Memorial Day weekend.
