4/20 events, deals in West Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Saturday is 4/20, the unofficial holiday celebrated by cannabis enthusiasts.

“420 is a day that’s steeped in lore for the cannabis community,” Pharmhouse Wellness CEO and Founder Casey Kornoelje said. “It’s really a day to celebrate cannabis culture. Less so for us about making money and more about spreading the joy and the gift of cannabis across our community.”

Several dispensaries are hosting events and offering deals to celebrate, like Pharmhouse, located in Grand Rapids, and Mint Cannabis, which has four locations in West Michigan.

Mint Cannabis District Manager Vanessa Elmore said the holiday is a way to thank current customers and to bring in new ones.

“It’s really just a way for us to bring the community into our locations and really just thank them and appreciate them for shopping with us all year round,” she said.

She said the brand expects long lines at all of its locations for 4/20.

“Since marijuana has become recreational, this holiday has become a little bit more fun, because people actually can embrace it now,” she said. “I definitely think that customers enjoy coming in, even though it is a little crazy at times. I think that they enjoy that they’re able to walk into a dispensary and buy what they want.”

Kornoelje said the day shows how far cannabis has come since it was legalized in Michigan in 2018.

“I’ve been in and around cannabis for 25 years,” he said. “I never thought as an adolescent, or somebody who got a felony in 2002 with cannabis, that we’d be able to do this legally and out in the open, and talking to the city and talking to the police department about events and things like that. It really is a testament to how far cannabis has come, just in a short period of time.”

He added that “there is still a lot of work to be done, both on the the regulatory side and on the the criminal justice side.”

“There’s still a lot of people out there that are that are struggling as a result of the war on drugs,” he said.

There’s a sense of camaraderie on 4/20, Elmore said, as people will stop in with friends, partners and family members. Her team often hears from customers on 4/20 that it’s their first stop at a dispensary.

As people get ready to celebrate, Michigan State Police is reminding people to not drive high. In a Thursday release, MSP said 21.7% of fatal crashes in 2022 involved drugs, and of those crashes, just over half only involved one vehicle.

“Those who plan to use cannabis on 4/20 — or any day — should not drive,” Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning Director Katie Bower said in the release. “If you find yourself drug-impaired, find a sober ride home.”
