I-35 frontage roads reopen near McNeil Road in Round Rock after SUV, train collide

The driver of a vehicle that collided with an Amtrak train on Wednesday morning in Round Rock has died, officials said.

She was identified as Peggy Carol Dreher, 76, of Round Rock, said Melanie Forcier, a police spokeswoman. Police closed the frontage roads at Interstate 35 and McNeil Road for more than four hours to investigate the incident, Forcier said. The roads were reopened at 3:45 p.m., she said. The cause of the accident is still being investigated, Forcier said. Dreher was driving an SUV, according to police.

There were no injuries on the train, which was carrying 46 passengers from San Antonio to Chicago, Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said.

"Amtrak Train 22 was traveling from San Antonio to Chicago when at approximately 10:58 a.m. Central time, the train came into contact with a vehicle obstructing the tracks, approximately 18 miles north of Austin," Amtrak officials said in a news release. It said the train was delayed for about four hours.

According to the Federal Railroad Administration, rail-crossing incidents are the second-leading cause of rail-related deaths in America, the release said. It said Amtrak works closely with Operation Lifesaver to emphasize the dangers of being on railroad property or disregarding warnings at rail crossings.
