33-year-old man killed after tree fell through Akron home Wednesday identified

The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the body of the 33-year-old man killed when a tree fell through an Akron home Wednesday as Paul Matvey, of Akron.

Authorities were called to the residence on the 400 block of Sumner Street at about 10:37 a.m. concerning a tree falling into a house due to a storm in the area. According to the Akron Fire Department, crews had to wait until the tree was cleared from the property before firefighters could remove Matvey, who was in the attic at the time.

Barberton Tree Service spent most of Wednesday afternoon removing the tree from the property before authorities could safely enter the building to reach Matvey, Akron Fire Lt. Joel Price said. The home was deemed not structurally sound for crews to enter into the attic at first, with collapsing floors preventing crews from going into the home.

No other injuries were reported due to the tree crash.

What happened to Sumner Street home?

The residence was condemned and torn down shortly after the tree company departed the scene, Barberton Tree Service President Lisa Devenport said Thursday. The tree was large enough that part of it fell onto the house next door. The Barberton Tree Service had to remove some foliage and wood from that property as well, which Devenport said was minorly damaged.
