3 Killed, 3 Injured After Car Flies Through Air and Hits Power Pole, Cuts Electricity to 500 Homes

The accident happened in Pasadena, California in the early hours of Saturday, May 11

Three people have died and three have been hospitalized after a car crashed into a building in Pasadena, California, over the weekend.

Around 2:30 a.m. local time on the morning of Saturday, May 11, a Tesla carrying six people ran through a red light before hitting a curb and flying into a power pole, per the Associated Press, CBS News, and Los Angeles Times.

The driver and two passengers died, and three people were ejected from the back of the car, officials said, according to the reports.

The driver, who was 22 years old, per CBS News, was said to be going at least double the 35 mph speed limit.

According to the L.A. Times, all six people involved in the accident were between 17 and 22 years old. The outlet stated the incident took place while the Tesla Model 3 sedan was traveling westbound on Foothill Boulevard. The building the car crashed into was unoccupied.

"The speed was so significant that the vehicle was able to launch into the air and travel through the air ... maybe a hundred feet," Pasadena Police Department Lieutenant Anthony Russo said, per CBS News.

"It's extremely devastating, and you think about tomorrow being Mother's Day," Russo added.

The Pasadena Police Department didn't immediately respond to PEOPLE when approached for comment.

The three people taken to hospital are in a stable condition, CBS News stated.

The outlet added that three of the six people involved in the crash were not wearing seatbelts, and stated investigators found some evidence at the scene suggesting that alcohol might have played a part in the crash. It's not been confirmed whether the driver was impaired.

Per CBS News, one of the victims was 20-year-old Pasadena City College student and Eagle Scout, Stefan Michael Pfeiffer. The outlet stated some of the people involved in the incident attended Maranatha High School. The private college preparatory Christian school shared a statement on Facebook on May 12.

"We are deeply saddened by this weekend's tragic car accident that claimed precious young lives," it began.

"We mourn this immense loss and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of all those affected," the message added.

"During this difficult time, we turn to our faith in Christ Jesus for comfort and strength and ask others to join us in praying for all who are suffering due to this tragedy," it concluded.

More than 500 homes and businesses reportedly lost power due to the incident. City of Pasadena spokesperson, Lisa Derderian, has confirmed that power has since been restored to the area, per the L.A. Times.

Derderian didn't immediately respond to PEOPLE when approached for comment.
