2nd annual ‘For the Love of Parks’ event happening this weekend

TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — The Travis County Parks Foundation is hosting its second annual “For the Love of Parks” event at Richard Moya Park on Saturday.

The event will have live music from Flaco Jimenez, Los Texmaniacs, and Mr. Will, and will have food trucks along with activities for kids. You will also get the chance to learn about the new 70 miles of hike and bike trails that will be installed in the county’s park system.

In the fall of last year, Travis County voters approved a bond package that provided $276 million for construction of new parks and trails.

The trail extensions will impact eastern Travis County along Onion, Gilliland, and Wilbarger creeks, as well as some of the Colorado River. The trails will allow people access to the river and creeks as well. In total, it will be 70 miles of trails.

“This is going to be orders of magnitude more access for people in East Austin, and East Austin just keeps growing and growing, so it’s going to be a great response,” Reggie James, a member on the board of the Travis County Parks Foundation, explained.

James says the county is currently working on land acquisition and is hoping to start the trail extensions in about a year.

Saturday’s event begins at 11 a.m. and will run to 3 p.m.
