27-year-old backseat passenger dead in crash that injured 1 other in Ogletown on Saturday

A 27-year-old man from Newark has died following a crash in Ogletown that injured one other Saturday morning, according to police.

His name is being withheld until his family is notified.

Delaware State Police said that the 27-year-old was sitting in the back seat of a Chevrolet Cruze driven by a 47-year-old man from New Castle. The car, which was heading east on East Chestnut Hill Road, turned left onto Chestnut Crossing Drive at 11:25 a.m.

As the car was turning, police said it was hit by a Ford Mustang driving west in the left lane of East Chestnut Hill Road. The front of the Mustang, which police said was driving at a "high rate of speed," hit the passenger side of the Chevrolet. The 27-year-old in the backseat was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car.

He was taken to the hospital, where he later died. Police said the 47-year-old driver was also taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Mustang, a 19-year-old man from Newark, was not injured in the crash.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call Sgt. J. Jefferson at 302-365-8484 or contact Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-847-3333.
