1 dead after crash off I-24 in South Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Interstate 24 was shut down in both directions near the Harding Place exit in South Nashville Wednesday morning for a deadly crash investigation.

According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, the investigation shows that Kevonta Lane, 19, of Nashville, was traveling west on I-24 in a 2017 Infiniti Q50 when the car veered off the interstate onto the right shoulder, traveled into the grass and into a wooded area, went airborne for a short time, and came to a final rest in the grass behind an address in the 500 block of Metroplex Drive.

According to authorities, Lane’s relative reported receiving a call at approximately 4 a.m. saying the victim had been in a crash. She found the vehicle through a GPS app and called 911.

I-24 was completely closed to traffic around 5:15 a.m., with westbound traffic diverted at the Harding Place exit. However, the interstate reopened around 6:15 a.m.

Police said surveillance video shows a sedan pulling into the parking lot at the Metroplex Drive address just after the wreck took place. Two individuals reportedly got out, approached the Infiniti, went back to their vehicle, and then returned to the Infiniti again before leaving.

Fatal crash investigators are trying to identify the people in the sedan that pulled up to the crash scene.

Officials said Lane was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the wreck, adding that the preliminary contributing factors appear to be speed and failure to maintain the travel lane.

No additional information was immediately released.
