2025: Construction to pause commercial flights at Columbus Airport

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL)— In a little under a year, the Columbus Airport is planning to reconstruct their main runway following a storm drainage failure. This is estimated to significantly impact commercial flight.

In March of 2025, the Columbus Airport is set to reconstruct Runway 6/24.

“The runway will be closed completely, the main runway. It will affect larger aircraft. So, this is going to affect our commercial operations. They will be suspended for that period of time. Also, our corporate and larger aircraft that would use that runway to land would also be suspended,” Columbus Airport Director Amber Clark shared. “Our secondary runway will be open for most of that project. There will be about a week where both of them have to close at the intersection. And so, all operations will cease for that week.”

This includes a temporary suspension in Delta flights and military operations. Clark says some pieces of the runway are nearly 80 years old and even though runway 6/24 has been maintained through the years, it is time for a complete reconstruction.

This was Clark’s response when asked if there is any concern of Delta not returning following construction, especially after American Airlines ceased operations in Jan. of 2023.

“We aren’t nervous about any interruption of service afterwards. We have a great relationship with Delta Airlines, and they are aware of this project, and they’ve been working with us through the design,” Clark said. “They have indicated they will be back after the completion of this. It’s just a suspension for now.”

The project is estimated to take 3 to 4 months with a nearly $40 million price tag.

The design for the total reconstruction is about halfway complete. So far, more than $1 million of federal grant money has been used for the design process of the runway. Funding for the reconstruction will come from a blend of local, federal, and state level funding.
