2024 Good In the Hood fest canceled as organizers undergo ‘process of renewal’

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The organizers behind one of the Pacific Northwest’s largest multicultural festivals have pulled the plug on the 2024 event.

Good In the Hood is typically held the last weekend of June, but this summer, the festival and parade will not return to Northeast Portland’s King School Park.

“As you can imagine, this has been a very hard decision for us, because we know what this festival means for us and our growing community,” event co-chair Simone Carter said in an announcement.

Good In the Hood began as a festival and a nonprofit in the early ‘90s, when parents and employees of Holy Redeemer Catholic School decided to fundraise for the school and honor its diversity.

The event has since become an “annual reunion of friends and family,” including live performances, food vendors and a small business marketplace. But according to its co-chair, the festival is going on a hiatus as the team behind it ushers in a new era.

“As an organization, we recognize the need for adaptation and evolution,” Carter said. “With this in mind, our current leadership is undergoing a process of renewal, recruiting new board members, and devising innovative strategies to ensure the sustainability and relevance of our festival and organization.”

Good In the Hood hadn’t been canceled since 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And after this summer’s hiatus, organizers plan to keep it going.

The 2025 festival is scheduled for Saturday, June 28 and Sunday, June 29.

In the meantime, the nonprofit organization plans to raise $2,500 in scholarships for Portland-area students this year.
