2024 Augusta National Women’s Amateur | Monday Updates
EVANS, Ga. (WJBF) – The top women’s amateur golfers in the world have arrived for the fifth edition of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Since the inaugural tournament in 2019, it has become the official beginning of golf-related events in and around Augusta leading up to the Masters Tournament.
Monday the field of 72 was able to utilize the practice facilities at Champions Retreat Golf Club in Evans, Georgia, host to the first two rounds. Champions Retreat is the world’s only golf course co-designed by golf’s “Big Three”: Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player.
This year’s tournament features the top 43 eligible amateurs in the final World Amateur Golf Ranking of 2023. Defending champion Rose Zhang began her professional career last May, but two of the last three champions return, Tsubasa Kajitani (2021) and Anna Davis (2022).
The world’s top-ranked amateur, Ingrid Lindblad of LSU, will make her fourth appearance in the tournament. She tied for third in 2021 and second in 2022 before missing the cut last year.
“I think a lot of people were just like, ‘What happened?’” Lindblad said of last year in a conference call prior to this year’s tournament. “Golf happened.”
Lindblad, a graduate student from Halmstad, Sweden, comes to Augusta fresh off of winning her 14th collegiate tournament at the Clemson Invitational last week. The win broke the record for most by a women’s golfer in the Southeastern Conference. She has won three times during the current college golf season.
This year’s field features players representing 18 countries and six continents. Tuesday, the field will play a practice round at Champions Retreat prior to rounds one and two there on Wednesday and Thursday. After Thursday’s second round, the 72-player field will be cut to 30 players and ties. On Friday, the entire field will play a practice round at Augusta National Golf Club before the final round there on Saturday.
WJBF will have live reports throughout the day beginning during Good Morning Augusta on Tuesday. Golf Channel will provide live coverage of the first two rounds Wednesday and Thursday from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. NBC will broadcast the final round on Saturday beginning at noon.
