2018 Land Rover Discovery: Here It Is

From Road & Track

Meet the new Discovery. Land Rover calls it "the best family SUV in the world," and while that's a pretty bold claim, we have to admit, the new rig looks pretty impressive on paper-with a luxurious seven-seat interior and a bunch of technology and off-road capability.

Considering we'd already seen a near-production prototype in the wild, an official photo of the front end, and several other leaked pictures, the look of the new Discovery isn't much of a surprise. But it wears its styling well, drawing from both the Range Rover and the smaller Discovery Sport.

Like the exterior, the interior design is what you'd expect in a new Land Rover You get big, chunky controls, a 10-inch touchscreen, leather everywhere, and the Jaguar/Land Rover corporate dial-shifter. Plus, you can remotely fold the rear seats with your smartphone. The automaker also claims the third row fits two full-size adults.

The real story here is the stuff you can't see, like the aluminum construction that Land Rover claims saves more than 1000 lbs. or an air suspension air suspension with height adjustability for better off-road clearance.

And speaking of off-road capability, the Discovery has plenty of it. It offers slightly more than 11 inches of ground clearance in its highest setting, while Land Rover's Terrain Response 2 system offers a driving mode for nearly every condition. You also get All-Terrain Progress Control, which takes over the throttle and braking on steep inclines. And if you have to cross a creek, the new Discovery can ford water at a depth of up to 36 inches.

Under the hood, Land Rover offers the option of either a supercharged V6 making 340 horsepower or a 254-horsepower diesel option. Eurpoe also gets two smaller diesel options that we won't see here in the States.

Look for the new Land Rover Discovery to go on sale in mid-2017, starting at roughly $50,000.
