20-year-old shot at Peters Mill public access parking area of Wildcat Creek

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A 20-year-old man was on the losing end of gunshots exchanged Sunday afternoon in the Peters Mill public access area of the Wildcat Creek along Eisenhower Court.

He was part of a group at the access area when a second group drove into the parking area about 3:20 p.m. Sunday, according to the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office. The two groups both started shooting at each other.

A few minutes later, a person living in the area called 911 and reported hearing about six or seven gunshots, according to the sheriff's office.

Both groups were gone when deputies arrived at the scene to find shell casings littering the area, according to the sheriff's office.

One of the groups drove to a house in Lafayette and called 911 telling city dispatchers they had been shot at, according to the sheriff's office.

The other group drove their wounded friend to the hospital, where staff called Lafayette police to report the shooting, according to the sheriff's office.

Lafayette police notified the sheriff's office of the calls, and county deputies took over the investigation.

The wounded man was treated and later released from the hospital, according to the sheriff's office.

Meanwhile, investigators are speaking with people in both groups trying to piece together what actually happened at the pubic access site.
