20-year-old man killed after 3-vehicle crash involving a CATS bus: CMPD

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — One person has died following a three-vehicle crash involving a CATS bus in east Charlotte on Saturday night, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Just before 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, officers responded a crash involving three vehicles in the 1700 block of Eastway Drive.

When they arrived officers saw a 2006 Honda Civic, a 2011 Ford CATS bus and a 2020 Infiniti QX60.

The driver of the Honda Civic, 20-year-old Javier Ortiz-Ruiz, was pronounced dead at the scene by Medic, officials said. Everyone else was taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators say Ortiz-Ruiz was driving south on Eastway Drive at a high rate of speed. Meanwhile, the CATS bus, driven by a 54-year-old woman, was going north and attempting to make a left turn onto Dunlavin Way. Police say there was one passenger on the bus.

As the bus was turning, the Honda hit the front right of the bus, which was pushed into the Infiniti, operated by a 61-year-old woman, at a stop sign on Dunlavin Way at Eastway Drive.

The investigation into the crash is still active. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information should contact Detective Pressley at 704-432-2169, Ext. 2.
