20-year-old faces murder charges in UNC Pembroke shooting that killed 2, wounded 4

PEMBROKE, N.C. (WBTW) — A 20-year-old man is facing murder and attempted murder charges in connection with a shooting earlier this month near the campus of the University of North Carolina Pembroke, Robeson County authorities said on Thursday.

Kalon Dial appeared in court for the first time on Thursday, according to District Attorney Matt Scott. He is charged with two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder.

Six people were shot in the March 2 incident. Cameron Taylor, a sophomore majoring in nursing and a member of the Eta Upsilon chapter of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, died in the shooting, along with Nicholas Logan, who was not a student.

Scott said bond for Dial was not addressed during Thursday’s court appearance and that the judge ordered an attorney be appointed to represent him. Scott said the fact that a bond was not set is not unusual at a first court appearance.

He also had his first court appearance Thursday. During that appearance, bond was not addressed by the judge — which Scott says is normal for first appearances. The judge ordered that he be appointed counsel.

Dial was booked into the Robeson County Detention Center on Wednesday, jail records show.
