$850k in damages reported, 30 people displaced following large apartment fire in south Charlotte

Firefighters with the Charlotte Fire Department battled a two-alarm fire in south Charlotte Sunday afternoon.

The fire broke out at an apartment complex on Fishers Farm Lane around 3 p.m. A second alarm was struck shortly after the fire broke out. Firefighters arrived to fire showing at the scene. The fire was controlled in 50 minutes by 60 firefighters.

Paramedics said two people were evaluated with non-life-threatening injuries.

An investigation determined that the fire started due to a grill on the second-floor balcony. It caused $850,000 in damages to 18 units, according to firefighters.

Channel 9′s Glenn Counts learned that some people from the building will be displaced from their homes as the building where the fire started is not livable.

“I saw the smoke when I first got home and my first thought I have a dog that I love terribly and I booked it inside,” one resident said. “I’m doing the dishes, I look out I see this billowing smoke and then I look closer at the window and I see these flames and I just started screaming,” another said.

The American Red Cross said it will be assisting 30 people who have been displaced due to the fire.

“The Red Cross has been in close contact with those affected by this fire to make sure they are getting everything they need at this difficult time,” said Executive Director of the American Red Cross, Charlotte Jason Gudzunas. “Our team has also been working with the firefighters, supporting them by setting up a canteen.”
