Two people are in hospital after a house fire just outside Wolfville, N.S., Monday morning.

Wolfville Fire Department Deputy Chief Chad Schrader said emergency services were called to a two-storey home on Newtonville Road just after 7 a.m. AT.

He said several fire departments with about 60 firefighters were at the scene of the blaze.

"The home was completely destroyed," Schrader said.

"We actually had to get an excavator in to help us extinguish the remaining bits of the fire because they were in the centre of the structure, and we weren't able to put people in for safety reasons."

Schrader said the two people were the only ones inside and both were taken to hospital. He did not mention the seriousness of their injuries.

Adrian Johnstone, a local photographer and volunteer firefighter for the Waterville Fire Department, was at the fire and said it was a "busy scene."

"There were lots of tankers because … there was a heavy fire load when [crews] arrived," Johnstone said.

He added that the home had a metal roof, which traps heat and makes fighting the fire more difficult.

Schrader said aside from the home, a car in the yard was damaged. He said the fire was officially extinguished around 11:30 a.m.
