2-year-old boy killed in Lakewood Ranch driveway accident, Florida Highway Patrol says

A 2-year-old boy was killed in a Lakewood Ranch accident when he was struck by a car on Wednesday morning, Florida Highway Patrol officials said.

At 8:20 a.m., the boy tried opening the rear passenger's door, then walked toward the rear of an SUV in the driveway in the 3200 block of Anchor Bay Trail. The 31-year-old woman driving did not see the child and backed up the car, according to the FHP report. The car’s right-rear tire ran over the boy.

The driver briefly stopped the car and then continued backing the car, running over the boy a second time with the front-right tire, the accident report said. After seeing the child in the driveway, the driver stopped the car.

FHP officials were unable to clarify if the child was related to the driver. A 6-year-old passenger was in the car with the driver during the accident.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene by Manatee County EMS. The FHP's Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating.
