2 indicted after death of Genesee County sergeant

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Two people have been indicted on multiple counts in connection with the death of a Genesee County Sheriff’s sergeant in March, the Genesee County District Attorney’s Office announced.

In March, Sgt. Thomas Sanfratello was working at Batavia Downs when he was notified of an alleged verbal confrontation. He and members of the facility’s security staff responded and began to escort Michael Elmore, 33, and Lyndsey Wilcox, 39, out of the hotel, according to officials.

Officials said that during an alleged struggle with Elmore, Sanfratello tried to use a stun gun, but suffered a fatal “medical event.”

Prior to the medical event, Elmore allegedly hit Sanfratello in the head and face with a metal necklace.

Sanfratello, 54, was a member of the Sheriff’s office since 1992.

Elmore has been indicted on the following charges:

  • first-degree aggravated manslaughter

  • aggravated criminally negligent homicide

  • first-degree assault

  • second-degree burglary (two counts)

  • second-degree assault

  • obstructing governmental administration

Wilcox, who was also charged in the incident, was indicted on the following counts:

  • second-degree burglary

  • second-degree assault

  • obstructing governmental administration

  • resisting arrest
