According to a release, Detectives Adrian Ontiveros and Christian Schanmier responded to a call of a man who accidentally shot himself on March 1 at around 10:42 a.m.

The sheriff’s office said Ontiveros immediately applied a tourniquet to the victim’s leg, preventing further blood loss, while Schanmier provided further life-saving measures by applying direct pressure and wrapping the wound to stop the bleeding. Authorities said the actions of the detectives stabilized the victim and saved his life.

“They demonstrated exceptional performance and composure in a serious life-threatening situation, to save a life, which without such intervention would have very likely resulted in death,” the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.
