In a statement celebrating her win, Chavez-DeRemer said, “From my decades of experience in local government, I know effective leadership requires putting in the work on the ground. I’ve crisscrossed the 5th District listening to constituents, bringing feedback with me directly to D.C. and taking action. Families are understandably concerned with high living expenses and want to feel safer in their communities. As an independent voice for Oregon, I’ve worked across the aisle to lower costs, tackle the fentanyl crisis, and reduce crime. I’m honored to have such a strong coalition of support from Oregonians of all backgrounds – Republicans, Democrats, and Independents – and I’ll continue fighting tirelessly to grow our movement so we can keep building a better Oregon by advancing commonsense solutions.”

Celebrating her win on the Democratic nomination, Bynum said, “I am beyond honored and grateful to be the Democratic nominee for Oregon’s 5th Congressional District. As a mother of four, I’m running to make the future brighter for them and every child in Oregon – for their education, their health, and their opportunities here at home. I’m running because working families in Oregon who are struggling with rising costs need a fighter who will deliver for them, not special interests, and I have a proven track record of delivering solutions to the biggest challenges facing our community.”

“There is so much at stake in this election and we have a choice between a democracy that works for folks here in Oregon, or the dysfunction in Congress that works for no one. Our district cannot afford two more years of an extreme enabler like Lori Chavez-DeRemer, who has gone along with the chaos of her far-right party and proven herself to be a part of the problem in DC at a time when our families need answers more than ever. In Congress, I’ll work to address our growing housing crisis, create good-paying jobs, and bring federal resources home where they belong. And unlike Lori Chavez-Deremer, I will do everything I can to protect and expand abortion access for Oregon women. The fight for our families and our future starts now – and I’m ready to lead,” Bynum continued.

McLeod-Skinner released the following statement conceding the race:

To my family, team, volunteers, and Oregonians, thank you for your support and hard work.

I’m so proud that our work has been driven by, and for, everyday Oregonians — fighting for a better future for all of us!

I would like to congratulate Janelle Bynum on becoming the Democratic nominee for Oregon’s 5th Congressional District.

I also want to express my appreciation to our families, who sacrifice more than people realize when a loved one runs for office.

It’s now time for Democrats to unite behind our shared goal of defeating the MAGA extremist agenda and winning this seat in November, so we can take back the House of Representatives.

Public service is a tremendous privilege. I have been honored to serve the people of Oregon in several capacities; I look forward to continuing my life of public service.

Incumbent Lori Chavez-DeRemer narrowly won the seat by two points in 2022 against McLeod-Skinner.

The District 5 seat includes Linn County, most of Clackamas and Deschutes counties, and parts of Multnomah, and Marion counties.
