Two Toronto police officers were injured in separate incidents Monday, the service says — one while stopping an attempted vehicle theft and the other in an alleged assault.

The first incident happened around 10 p.m. in the area of Yonge Street and Kingsdale Avenue in North York after police received reports of a group of males trying to steal a car.

Officers arrived on scene during the attempted auto theft, police said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. While making an arrest, an officer fractured their leg and was taken to hospital for treatment. The Toronto Police Association says an officer underwent surgery for a serious, but non-life-threatening injury.

Another male allegedly involved in the attempted theft was arrested nearby a short time later, police said.

A 19-year-old man from Woodbridge is charged with attempted theft over $5,000 and assaulting a police officer. Another 19-year-old Toronto man is charged with one count of attempted theft over $5,000.

No descriptions of the remaining suspects were released.

Then around 11 p.m., an officer in full uniform walking in the area of Duncan Street and Queen Street West was approached by a man who engaged them in conversation and then allegedly assaulted them.

A TPA spokesperson told CBC Toronto the man asked a female officer if she was a police officer. The TPA says when she confirmed she was, the man allegedly punched her in the face.

A bystander intervened and the alleged assailant was arrested, police said.

The officer was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The 31-year-old man of no fixed address was charged with assaulting a peace officer. He was scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing later Tuesday.
