2 arrested for mail theft after traffic stop

(KRON) – Two people were arrested after a traffic stop for mail theft on Wednesday, according to the Hercules Police Department.

Hercules police officers conducted a traffic stop on a 2022 Chevrolet Malibu with Washington plates for a traffic violation.

A woman was driving the vehicle and a man was in the passenger seat. Both occupants were 30 years old.

According to the police investigation, the sedan was determined to be involved in multiple mail thefts in the Petaluma area. In addition, the man was on Post Release Community Supervision.

Officers conducted a compliance search after detaining the suspects. The search yielded a large amount of mail, checks and identifications that did not belong to the subjects. Police said the IDs were from several nearby cities. Officers also found two pry tools that are consistent with the type of instruments used to open mailboxes and doors.

The subjects were arrested and transported to the Martenez Detention Facility. Hercules PD contacted the Petaluma Police Department with their findings.

The Chevrolet was towed.
