$1B tower in Hollywood to create 22-story vertical garden
A new proposal for an office tower in Hollywood would bring a bit of nature into the workplace.
The Star, as the 22-story tower is known, is planned for the 6000 block of Sunset Boulevard near Sunset Gower Studios.
Plans for a new structure there are years in the making, but the former glass office tower evoking “a sunset … on Sunset Boulevard” designed by the Chinese firm MAD Architects has been replaced.
Now, English architect Norman Foster has designed “a cylindrical high-rise stitched with colorful gardens spiraling from street to roof,” as described by the Los Angeles Times.
“This is a true reflection of the workplace of the future, nurturing community, wellbeing and collaboration with green social terraces spiraling through the building that will encourage and enliven the city’s incredible creative industries,” Foster said in a news release.

Foster is also the designer of the prominent One Beverly Hills project that’s currently under construction, and the two complexes share prominent and large garden and natural areas.
The property owner, Maggie Miracle, apparently preferred that approach, telling the Times she went with this new design “because she wanted to incorporate garden-like outdoor spaces, which have proved increasingly attractive to office tenants since the pandemic temporarily drove workers out of confined quarters.”
“The office space seamlessly moves from indoor to outdoor settings with extraordinary collaborative areas and tasteful settings that allow for contemplation and innovation,” Miracle added in a news release.
In addition to appealing to those who love outdoor garden spaces, the project also wants to pay homage to its Hollywood neighborhood. The project’s website features imagery reminiscent of the Hollywood Walk of Fame and advertises that “a new star is coming to Hollywood.”
That new star comes with a large price tag, however. The Star on Sunset is now expected to cost $1 billion, about double the $500 million anticipated for the MAD Architects design.
