17-year-old killed, 3 others injured in apparent high-speed crash in Glenview

GLENVIEW, Ill. — A 17-year-old boy was killed and three other people were hospitalized, two in critical condition, after a two-vehicle crash late Sunday night in Glenview.

Glenview police say the crash occurred around 11 p.m. on the 1200 block of East Lake Avenue. A Ford Mustang with heavy damage and another vehicle split in half could be observed at the crash scene.

The Cook County Coroner’s Office identified the person who died as Marko Niketic, 17, of Glenview. Police confirmed Monday that Niketic was driving one of the vehicles and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police also said the Glenview Fire Department transported two people to area hospitals. The second driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and the passengers of both vehicles are in critical condition, police say.

A heavy police presence remained at the scene Monday morning, with East Lake Avenue shut down in both directions from Wagner Road to Waukegan Road, until it reopened late Monday morning.

“You could see by the debris field here that we had a lot going on,” Glenview Fire Department Division Chief John Tourtellot said.

Nathan Clark, who witnessed the crash, says a driver flew past him at a high rate of speed and was turning their headlights on and off on the dark road before colliding with another vehicle.

“He was probably going about 90 (miles per hour) whenever he sped in front of me,” Clark said. “If I had to guess, he floored it and turned off his lights.

“There was no reason for it. I don’t think it was like road rage or anything. I think he just wanted to go fast and (was) being reckless.”

In a letter to grief-stricken Glenbrook South High School students and parents, principal Dr. Barbabra Georges said in part, “The GBS student services team is responding to the emotional needs of all students and staff by making student services personnel available.”

The Glenview Police Department, with assistance from the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force’s Major Crash Assistance Team, is still investigating the crash.
