12th Street reopens months after mudslide in Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Students and leaders in the Hill City gathered to celebrate the re-opening of 12th Street after the road was closed for about eight months.

In July 2023, storms roared across Central Virginia leaving several roads flooded and closed. A significant rainfall hit Lynchburg leading to a large mudslide on a portion of 12th Street between Polk and Harrison Street.

As a result of the damage, the road was closed leaving hundreds of residents to take detours each day.

The City Council appropriated emergency maintenance funds to stabilize, repair, and restore the bank. Maintenance crews put together a six-inch coat of concrete on the slop.

On March 27, the city held a ribbon-cutting to celebrate the completion of the project and the road opening back up to traffic.

“We’re glad to have gotten it done and get this important street open. It’s definitely an artery from midtown to downtown and vice versa. so we’re happy to have it opened,” said Gaynelle Hart, the Lynchburg Director of Public Works:
