Cleverly named, 325 Day is celebrated each year on March 25, playing homage to the Abilene area code. On Monday, residents were encouraged to shop locally and enticed by deals and discounts in order to help the city’s economic growth.

“Every dollar spent, the community sees up to $7.00 in value over time,” explained Doug Peters, CEO and president of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce. “Because the person who spends that dollar, then it’s the person that they spend it with, spends it again, and that happens over and over about seven times before this community really loses its value.”

This year, more than 100 business participated in 325 Day by offering deals in relation to the number. For example, Abilene Candle Co. offered $3.25 off the purchase of a candle, and Lone Star Sparkle promised a 25% discount off three cleans.

First time participant, Double Tree Hotel, got involved due to its reputation with other small businesses.

“We know that local businesses are really excited to be part of that… So, we decided like, ‘hey, let’s jump in and do this and put in,’ so we have a cheeseburger for $3.25,” said Double Tree’s general manager, John Kukreja.

The day also gives local business a chance to highlight and market to the public in a different way. Not only is it good for business, it’s good for customers.

Residents like Anahi Martinez were thrilled to see everything the city has to offer, “I’m really excited about checking out some local businesses that I’ve never heard of before. If it wasn’t for [325Day.com], I would not have known that some of these existed.”

The day was put into proclamation by Abilene’s Mayor Weldon Hurt Monday morning, marking the fourth year of the day observed.

325 Day was created in 2021 by Abilene Teachers Federal Credit Union (ATFCU) when city morale was at a noticeable low point after the February storm. ATFCU said it was modeled after El Paso’s 915 Day.
