1 teen dead, 1 injured after North Memphis shooting

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One teen is dead and another is injured after a shooting at a Douglass Community Center in North Memphis Tuesday afternoon.

According to Memphis Police, just before 4 p.m., officers responded to a shooting behind 1616 Ash Street. Two male teenagers were found suffering from gunshot wounds — one was found behind the community center while another ran inside for help.

They were both taken to Regional One Hospital, one in critical condition and one non-critical.

MPD says one of the teens, who was found behind the community center, was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Regarding the incident, Memphis Shelby County Schools said in a statement that they “mourn the loss of the teenager who was involved in a shooting in the Douglass community” and they will monitor the situation.

Police say they are now in the process of pulling surveillance video from nearby schools as they hope to piece together what happened.

“There were several people at the community center at the time it happened,” Public Information Officer, Theresa Carlson said. “So, if you were one of them we ask that you please call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.”

That may be much easier said than done because North Memphis resident, Dalesia Harris, told WREG that everybody “lives by a code” in the neighborhood.

When asked what it would take to break the “code”, Harris said people would have to stop being fearful of possible repercussions.

“When somebody finally stands up and don’t be afraid of the people out here,” Harris said. “But until then you live by the street, you die by the street.”

There is no suspect information at this time, but this is still an ongoing investigation.

Police again ask that if anyone has information, they call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
