1 killed in head-on collision between car and fuel-tanker truck in Johnston County
A 42-year-old North Carolina man was killed in a head-on collision with a fuel tanker truck in Johnston County on Tuesday.
It happened around 5 p.m. on N.C. 39 near Meadowbrook Lane just outside Selma, the N.C. State Highway Patrol reported.
A 2024 Freightliner M2106 carrying gasoline, diesel fuel and off-road diesel was traveling north on the highway when a 2015 Nissan Sentra traveling south at a high rate of speed, crossed the center line and struck the tanker truck, according to a news release.
The truck ran off road to the right and caught fire. The Nissan also ran off the road to the right, coming to rest on the shoulder.
The driver of the Nissan, Quentin Peter Greear of Louisburg, was killed.
The tanker truck driver was able to get out of the truck’s cab and was not injured, the Highway Patrol reported.
Speed was a contributing factor in the crash, and drug impairment is also suspected. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.
There will be no charges, the Highway Patrol said, since the driver of the Nissan crossed the center line and caused the collision.
The Johnston County Sheriff’s office, Selma Fire Department, Antioch Fire Department, Archer’s Lodge Fire Department, Johnston County EMS and N.C. Department of Transportation also responded to the collision.
