A 1999 Subaru Forester was going north on NC 16 when they crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a 2011 Toyota Scion going south, officials said.

The driver of the Subaru, 46-year-old Shannon Lynn Austin, was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene.

The driver of the Scion, a 23-year-old man, was taken to a medical center in Charlotte where he is in critical condition.

Investigators don’t believe speed or impairment were contributing factors in the crash. NC 16 was closed for about two hours during the on-scene investigation.
