Neighbors and family members at the scene were distraught after learning that one man had died, and another was in critical condition.

Prine said a car pulled into the backyard of a home that sits on the corner of Euclid Avenue and High Street around 1 p.m.

He said several people got out of the car and began firing at people in the backyard.

He said the shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute.

“I’m confident that the group of individuals that drove over here had to know the individuals in the yard,” Prine said. “So more than likely, this is probably an ongoing dispute between the two groups or even possibly a retaliation shooting.”

WKRG News 5 spoke with a neighbor, who lives a block over, and described the gunfire as a big boom.

“I was out there in my backyard, like always, you know, and I heard a sound, and it sounded like a dump truck,” he explained. “And it went like, ‘boom, boom, boom’, and I said it was too loud to be a gunshot and come to find out, that’s what it was. Five or six shots right behind one another.”

With no one in custody yet, the Mobile Police Department is urging anyone with information to come forward.

“Yes, they have a responsibility to come forward and tell us what they saw and what they heard,” Major Linda Tims said.

“We understand in these situations, a lot of times the neighbors or the community members are reluctant to come forward,” Prine said. “But nonetheless, we all have a part to play when it comes to keeping the streets and Mobile safe.”

Investigators haven’t released the name of the deceased victim as of yet.
