Man who died in airplane crash at Spicewood Airport identified

SPICEWOOD, Texas (KXAN) — Officials identified the man who died in an airplane crash at the Spicewood Airport in Burnet County on Monday.

That man was identified as Wesley Perkins, 74, of Lakeway, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Around 6:30 p.m. DPS responded to a “single engine plane crash,” which was located near 100 Piper Lane.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it will investigate the crash with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which will lead the investigation.

The NTSB said Tuesday morning investigators were headed to the scene and would begin the process of documenting the site and examining the plane. After that, the plane will be “recovered to a secure facility for further evaluation,” the NTSB continued.

The NTSB identified the plane as a Lancair Legacy FG airplane, which according to Lancair’s website, is a two-seat single-engine light aircraft.

The airplane crashed while doing touch and go landings, according to preliminary information from the NTSB.

NTSB said investigations involve three primary areas: the pilot, the aircraft and the operating environment.

It said as part of the investigation process, investigators will gather the following information and records:

  • Flight track data

  • Recordings of any air traffic control communications

  • Aircraft maintenance records

  • Weather forecasts and actual weather and lighting conditions around the time of the accident

  • Pilot’s license, ratings and recency of flight experience

  • 72-hour background of the pilot to determine if there were any issues that could have affected the pilot’s ability to safety operate the flight

  • Witness statements

  • Electronic devices that could contain information relevant to the investigation

  • Any available surveillance video, including from doorbell cameras

Witnesses to the accident or anyone who may have surveillance video or other information are asked to contact the NTSB at witness@ntsb.gov.

A preliminary report will be available within 30 days and will be accessible online.
