1 dead, 1 seriously injured after I-35 head-on crash with semi

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two-vehicle crash on Sunday morning that left one person dead and another with serious injuries.

The crash occurred at 3:15 a.m. on Interstate 35 near Edgerton Road. According to reports from the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2021 Jeep Gladiator with Florida license plates drove in the opposite direction of traffic — southbound on the interstate’s northbound lanes — and hit a tractor-trailer head-on.

KHP said the driver of the Jeep, 27-year-old Mathew Karabas from Monroe, New Jersey, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, while the passenger, 22-year-old Eric Diaz from Melbourne, Florida, was killed in the crash.

According to KHP, the driver and passenger of the tractor-trailer had no apparent injuries.

Northbound Interstate 35 was closed for many hours afterward. However, by 12:45 p.m., Johnson County Sheriff’s reported it was back open.
