New $1 coin recognizes Huntsville’s role in Apollo space program

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WHNT) — A new $1 coin released by the United States Mint celebrates Huntsville’s role in the Apollo space program.

U.S. Mint’s American Innovation $1 coin program is a multi-year series to honor innovation and innovators by issuing $1 coins for each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and the five U. S. territories.

Program has $35 million to help home buyers with down payments & lower interest rates

The coin recognizing Alabama depicts a Saturn V rocket taking off on the tail side of the coin with a moon in the background.

The Saturn V was designed and built Under Aerospace Engineer Wernher von Braun at the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville. 13 of the 363-foot tall rockets were launched by NASA between 1967 and 1973.

“Alabama is a state of innovators, and the Saturn V rocket perfectly exemplifies that,” Alabama Governor Kay Ivey said. “It was Alabamians who helped put man on the moon, and today, we remain committed to ensuring our country is not only on the forefront of space exploration, but innovation in all areas. We are proud to now see the Saturn V rocket displayed on this coin and are honored to have Alabama and her people represented in this special, commemorative way.”

As part of the program, the U.S. Mint said four coins are being released each year from 2019 to 2032 in the order that the states ratified the constitution. Alabama’s coin was the second to be released in 2024, and it was made available for purchase on April 8.
