1.25 million square foot office complex opens in California’s capital

(FOX40.COM) — A 1.25 million gross square foot office complex that’s named after California’s longest-serving state employee in history is scheduled to open in Sacramento on Wednesday.

The May Lee State Complex is located in the Sacramento River district at 651 Bannon Street. The four-tower facility is a part of the Department of General Services 10-year plan to renovate or replace state office buildings in the Sacramento area.

California’s longest-serving state employee May Lee dies at 102 years old

“The facility is named in honor of former DGS employee May Lee, the longest-serving California state worker who had 79 years of service,” DGS said in a press release. “May passed away in 2023 at 102, just shy of what would have been her 103rd birthday, but she will always be remembered for her cheerful disposition and irreplaceable institutional knowledge.”

Sacramento’s 17.3 acre complex leads the way in sustainability as one of the largest zero-net carbon facilities and the most extensive all-electric kitchen in the country, according to DGS. The building has on-site and structured above-grade parking that hosts 90 electric vehicle charging stations with the capacity for more.

Additionally, the project was reportedly designed to reduce 5 million gallons of water annually which is the equivalent to nine Olympic-sized swimming pools.
