The Voice top four finalist Jeffery Austin stood out on Season 9 for his plaintive balladry, but his new single, “Bulletproof,” is unexpectedly effervescent. The synth-driven track, mixed by Peter Mokran (Christina Aguilera, Toni Braxton, Prince, Flaming Lips) and co-written/produced by Sayers Club music director Nick Rosen (Bruno Mars, Macy Gray, Feist), still addresses Austin’s go-to topics of heartbreak and loss — but its uptempo chorus gives off an ‘80s vibe a la Bleachers or Carly Rae Jepsen, and the song showcases entirely new facets of the crooner’s vocals.
Jeffery Austin started off as Team Gwen’s dark horse on The Voice last fall, but then he galloped all the way to the top four and the Season 9 finale. Fans of Jeffery’s soulful, emotive interpretations of heartbreak ballads by Sam Smith, Adele, Jessie Ware, Robyn, Labrinth, and James Bay on The Voice will find much to like about “Only You,” which is the first song Jeffery has written by himself. Yahoo Music’s Reality Rocks is excited to premiere an exclusive acoustic version, shot in Yahoo’s gorgeous new Playa Vista studio, with Jeffery’s Voice castmate and producer, Timothy Atlas, playing guitar.
Top four finalist Jeffery Austin knows he’s the dark horse of The Voice Season 9. He was a one-chair turn in the Blind Auditions, his Battle Round was montaged, and he only made it to the finale via the Twitter Save. Sitting at the legendary Henson Studios on break from this week’s iTunes session, he still can’t seem to believe his luck, having just fulfilled a dream of recording a duet with coach Gwen Stefani … which Yahoo Music’s Reality Rocks can exclusively reveal will be Stevie Nicks and Don Henley’s “Leather and Lace.”
