New 'Furious 7' Trailer Offers More Bad-Guy Backstory

The new Furious 7 trailer that dropped late Wednesday offers a few more tidbits about the highly anticipated sequel coming out April 3.

For instance, the new villain on the block, Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), is a killing machine. As Hobbs (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) puts it: “They created a monster.” If you thought Deckard’s little bro, Owen Shaw (played by Luke Evans in the last installment), was bad, this guy is way worse. As proof, we see Deckard bomb the heck out of Hobbs, who first lands on an SUV and then in the hospital at the 56-second mark.

Deckard also comes equipped with a team of mercenaries ready to wipe out the Fast gang. (Next up, Fast vs. Expendables?)

Toretto (Vin Diesel) bluntly assess the situation, “This time it ain’t just about being fast.”

We also get a little bit more of Kurt Russell here — who appears to be a good guy and in a position of authority, though his role has been kept under wraps thus far.

Here’s a review of previous Furious 7 footage, some of which appears again in the new trailer above:

—Seen in Furious 7’s first trailer from November, the crew gets airdropped while inside their parachute-fitted cars to kick some butt.

—There was a whole lot of the late Paul Walker in the footage — some of which may have been of one or both of his brothers. They acted as body doubles after the action star was killed in a car crash; Walker’s face got CGI-replicated in post-production for certain scenes.

—The car-happy crew is being hunted by Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), the angry brother of the last installment’s villain, Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) — who presumably died after getting thrown from a plane.

—We got a super-fast peek in the sequel’s Super Bowl spot of another girl fight, and even more of a look in this new one. But this time Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) is throwing down with Kara (Ronda Rousey) while in formalwear. It remains to be seen if it will be as epic as the London tube female fisticuffs from Fast & Furious 6 with Gina Carano.

—The team goes to Abu Dhabi, baby! And judging from their suits and dresses, it gets fancy.

—Ramsey, played by British actress Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones), is a new addition to the otherwise all-American gang.
