Michael Douglas Has a Solution for 'Jurassic World's' Achilles' High Heel
No dinosaur can scare Claire out of her heels in ‘Jurassic World’ (Universal)
Jurassic World just hit theaters on Friday, but we’ve already been treated to an endless discussion about Bryce Dallas Howard’s footwear. Her character, the uptight park manager Claire, refers to the dinosaurs as “assets,” abandons her young nephews with her distracted assistant, and engages in some retrograde banter with dinosaur whisperer Owen (Chris Pratt). But one of the most curious things about her is that she never, ever changes her shoes. Her elegant white business suit gets ripped to pieces and dragged through the mud over the course of the movie, but Claire manages to run, drive a truck, and slog through the jungle wearing a highly impractical pair of high heels.
Jurassic World director Colin Treverrow has said that Howard insisted on keeping her heels on no matter how serious the stunts got, and Howard herself has said she trained “as if I was in the Olympics” to get her ankles ready for all that abuse. However serious the production was about Claire’s stiletto commitment, we couldn’t help but wonder why they didn’t at least take a page from the 1984 adventure Romancing the Stone, starring Michael Douglas as Jack, a swashbuckling smuggler and Kathleen Turner as Joan, a prim romance novelist who crosses paths with him in the Colombian jungle. Like Claire, Joan is woefully underprepared for the backcountry, but Jack quickly solves her shoe problem with a machete. (See below.)

But if we can’t get a heroine who knows how to dress for the great outdoors, can we at least get one who knows when it’s time to switch to flats?
