Pitch-Perfect Take on Classic 'Ghostbusters' Theme Arrives From Japan

July’s Ghostbusters reboot comes equipped with a “reimagined” version of its famous Ray Parker Jr. theme, courtesy of Fall Out Boy and Missy Elliott — and let’s just say that it’s less than inspired. Okay, fine — it’s borderline unlistenable. However, just when it seemed like Paul Feig’s comedy had botched its signature song, along comes a Japanese tie-in tune, and (thank the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man!) all is forgiven.

Recorded by four Japanese comedians — Tomochika, Oniyakko Tsubaki, Naomi Watanabe, and Shizuyo Yamasaki — this new spin on the classic Ghostbusters track (watch the video above) is everything the Fall Out Boy take wasn’t: silly, lighthearted, and funny. In other words, it doesn’t take itself seriously, and embraces its true nature as a synth-heavy, neon-drenched, ’80s-era ditty about comrades teaming up to catch spooky specters. While wearing full-body jumpsuits. And proton packs. And engaging in absurd choreographed dancing.

Whether Paul Feig’s highly anticipated (and hotly debated) film will share the spirit of this ridiculous lark or Fall Out Boy’s officially sanctioned slog remains to be seen. We’re rooting it’s this new take that feels like the right fit with the film when it finally arrives in theaters on July 15.
