The new Ghostbusters cast – Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones – have spent the past week hanging out with their old-school cinematic predecessors, palling around with original cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts first via selfie, and then with an extended visit to “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” But the question remains: who, precisely, are these new specter-fighting heroes?

In a series of featurettes, Ghostbusters introduces audiences to its heroines (and their sweet ride) – all in an effort to prepare fans for their upcoming comedic saga, which debuts next month.

First up is Melissa McCarthy’s Abby Yates, whom the star says has ”always been a believer. Doesn’t matter if people are making fun of her, which they always have.”

Next is Wiig’s Erin Gilbert, whom director Paul Feig describes as a character who has her belief in ghosts “thrust upon her” by supernatural circumstances.

As for Kate McKinnon’s techie Jillian Holtzmann, the key word seems to be “bizarre.”

Last but certainly not least, there’s Leslie Jones’ Patty Tolan, who joins the crew after witnessing ghosts first-hand – and whose MTA-bred knowledge of the city becomes a valuable asset to the team.

Of course, there’d be no Ghostbusters without the formidable foursome riding around NYC in their reconfigured hearse, the Ecto-1 — which director Feig felt was, for authenticity’s sake, the most important element that had to be included in his big-screen version.

With its leading ladies proton-pack prepped and ready to combat the forces of evil, all that remains is the release of their entire otherworldly adventure: Ghostbusters slimes its way into theaters on July 15.
