Athletics' Alex Wood goes on IL with rotator cuff tendonitis

The Athletics placed Opening Day starter Alex Wood on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with rotator cuff tendonitis, where the veteran left-hander will join Paul Blackburn (metatarsal stress reaction) and Joe Boyle (lower back strain). Wood pitched a season low two innings in an 8-4 loss in Seattle Sunday, with both  manager Mark Kotsay and Wood conceding there was an issue with his shoulder. Kotsay is scheduled to speak to the media before the A's face the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park in the third game of a four-game series.

A's starting pitcher reveals injury after loss to Seattle Mariners

The Oakland A's became one of the bigger surprises in baseball last weekend when, after six straight wins, they improved to .500 for the season and moved to within 1 1/2 games of first place in the American League West. It's been a bit of a struggle for the A's ever since. Sunday, they lost 8-4 to the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park, marking their sixth loss in the last eight games. The A's trailed 5-0 after two innings, but a Max Schuemann error paved the way to a four-run second for the division-leading Mariners, who took two of three in the series.

Improving A's look for second straight win vs. Pirates

Veteran pitchers will go head-to-head for the third time in their careers when Alex Wood and the Oakland Athletics host Mitch Keller and the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night in the second contest of a three-game series. Riding the momentum of four wins over the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles on the road last week, the A's opened a 10-game homestand with arguably their best all-around performance of the season in a 5-1 win Monday. Joe Boyle combined with two relievers on a two-hitter and five different A's batters contributed extra-base hits.
