In preparation for their series-winning game against the Washington Nationals on May 12, the Boston Red Sox made a shocking roster move. Josh Winckowski has been in Boston since the beginning of the season when he made the big-league team out of spring — the righty even contended for a spot in the starting rotation over the winter. The night before Mother's Day, he was optioned to Worcester as the corresponding move to Brayan Bello's activation from the 15-day injured list. At the time of his demotion, Winckowski carried a 3.33 ERA with 19 strikeouts and 11 walks in 24.1 innings pitched.
The caught stealing helped secure a 3-2 Sox win and series victory. “They're very aggressive, very athletic, and very fast,” said Wong afterward of the Nationals, who rank second in the majors with 68 stolen bags. Wong made all of his throws Sunday. “The other day he bounced a few,” said manager Alex Cora.
The Red Sox' pitching staff is off to a historic start through 30 games, and it all starts with new pitching coach Andrew Bailey, writes John Tomase.
