The Boston Red Sox entered their Thursday night matchup with the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park needing a win to split the series, but instead, they dropped the contest 7-5. Starter Cooper Criswell came back down to earth a bit after a solid start to the year, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks over 3 2/3 innings. Criswell wasn't helped by shortstop Ceddanne Rafaela, who made another error in the field, leading to one of the runs, and a wild pitch allowed another to score. When Criswell exited the game in the fourth, the Red Sox were down 5-1 due to a Rafael Devers home run in the second, his second shot in as many games.
Zack Littell is living the life. Littell is currently one of the better starting pitchers in the American League, sitting with a 3.02 ERA in eight starts. Exactly one year after joining the Rays, the 28-year-old has landed in a good place. When you're a pitcher who is trying to revitalize your career, Tampa Bay is always a good place.
The Nationals will send Jake Irvin (2-3, 3.72 ERA) to the mound on Saturday. Stat of the day (courtesy of Stat Masterson himself, Alex Speier): Friday's game marked the 12th time in 38 contests this year and fourth in the last seven that the Sox have been held to no more than one run.
