The Nationals will send Jake Irvin (2-3, 3.72 ERA) to the mound on Saturday. Stat of the day (courtesy of Stat Masterson himself, Alex Speier): Friday's game marked the 12th time in 38 contests this year and fourth in the last seven that the Sox have been held to no more than one run.
Jake Irvin responded from his worst outing of the season to pitch six solid innings and CJ Abrams smacked a two-run homer to help the Washington Nationals complete a four-game sweep of the host Miami Marlins, winning 7-2 on Monday night. Irvin (2-2), who gave up four hits, struck out three and didn't issue a walk, was unscathed until Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s two-out, two-run home run in the sixth. Dylan Floro and Matt Barnes completed the combined four-hitter.
As George Bush once malapropped — fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice … won't get fooled again. Last week at Dodger Stadium, right-hander Jake Irvin held the Dodgers scoreless for six innings in a Washington Nationals victory. Getting a second look at Irvin Wednesday night at Nationals Park, the Dodgers roughed him up on their way to collecting 20 hits (including eight doubles) in an 11-2 rout of the Nationals.
