The Art of the Brick: LEGOs Take The Art World By Storm

LEGO has long since been an inspiration for kids and kids at heart to build anything their minds could dream up. The little bricks have come a long way since their inception in the early twentieth century. What started out in a Danish carpentry workshop has burgeoned into an international corporation with offices and locations in dozens of countries. And with six Legoland amusement park locations spanning from Denmark, to California, to Malaysia, it’s safe to say that LEGO mania has taken over the world.

Among its accolades, including an Oscar nominated film, LEGO can now add art to the list of achievements. In a traveling exhibit called “The Art of the Brick,” LEGOs are transformed into both original and adapted works of art. The exhibit will be on display at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia until September 6th.

Artist Nathan Sawaya is responsible for crafting each and every masterfully crafted LEGO piece in the exhibition. He now owns more than 2.5 million LEGO bricks and is recognized as the first person to take LEGO into the art world.
