Pumpkin Carving Is OK. These Gorgeous Gourd Lamps Are Unbelievable.
Some people carve gourds. Polish artist Przemek Krawczyński transforms them into high-end pieces of art.
Using round calabash gourds, Krawczyński makes intricate, handcrafted lamps. But these aren’t just your average lamps. The patterns he carves into the gourds create breathtaking shadows that appear in certain lighting.
“By day my lamp is a unique sculpture, while at night the light breathes new life into that sculpture, seeping through intricately carved wood and passing through thousands of holes,” Krawczyński writes on his website.
Each lamp takes two to four months to make, depending on size. The process starts with sketching, mapping, and outlining patterns. Then he cleans and carves the gourd, engraving, perforating, and painting it into a one-of-a-kind design.
“I never repeat the patterns of my lamps,” he says.
The lamps are very delicate, but Krawczyński compares their texture to dry wood. Unlike your average jack-o’-lantern, they will not rot.
