This Room Looks Elegant, But Look Closely and It'll Creep You Out

We fuss over little decorative details, like the perfect throw pillows or shag rug, but how deeply do you really pay attention to those accessories when looking at the room as a whole?

Artist Fiona Roberts toys with that concept in her latest installation piece, “Intimate Vestiges.“ Upon first glance, the room looks seemingly normal. But look closely, and the details might be unsettling. Each piece in the room, from the wallpaper to the rug, is designed to look like various parts of the body.

Her intention with the piece was to show the simultaneous comfort and trauma we experience at home.

“The subjective nature of the home is explored through a variety of body textures that are obscured by pattern, repetition, and traditional ornamentation in household furnishings,” Roberts states. “This blurs the boundaries between the home and body, making it difficult to determine where the house ends and where the person begins.”
