Life-Size LEGOs Are Better Than You Ever Dreamed (and More Useful)

We’ve seen some pretty amazing feats with Legos — there was the man who paid down $25,000 in debt with his Lego art and zillions of Legos transformed into amazing sculptures including a full-size T-Rex. Heck, there’s an entire hotel decked out in the little bricks. But while we’ve been awed by many of the designs built with the snappy blocks, we’ve never seen anything we could a) truly hope to achieve ourselves, and b) actually use.

EverBlock’s life-size Legos just changed all that.

The company’s giant modular plastic blocks stack atop each another and lock together with raised lugs, in a very familiar way. But they’re tools, not toys: You can build functional furniture and other structures with them.

Founder Arnon Rosan initially envisioned EverBlock as a way of quickly and easily constructing furniture like couches and coffee tables, but found that the blocks have applications far beyond those. The company is currently compiling a library of instructions to guide people through design ideas.

He also sees them as potential quick construction material for something like emergency shelters, he told Wired. “You could drop two pallets of these by helicopter and the next thing you know you have a solid, rigid structure,” he said.

It’s an intriguing idea for their application — one that’s quite welcome in the light of this being the 10 year anniversary of devastating Hurricane Katrina.

Like the Legos that inspired them, the blocks come in different colors (14 of ‘em!) and sizes: foot-long, half-foot, and quarter foot. They’re not back-breaking to lift, either — they vary in weight from two pounds to a quarter-pound. And they cost between $7.25 and $3.95 apiece. We’re sold.

Soooo, we’ll be on a beach building our own colorful DIY EverBlock getaway if you need us. BRB!
